What is the purpose of a DOT Physical?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to undergo a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical to ensure they are physically fit and able to perform the duties of their job safely.

Our experienced medical professionals will navigate you through the medical guidelines and ensure that you are healthy and capable of safely performing the duties of a CMV driver. Our priority is to help you resume driving as soon as possible.

If you operate a motor vehicle that carries over 15 passengers, transport more than 9 passengers for immediate payment (including the driver), drive for interstate commerce, drive a vehicle weighing 10,001 lbs or more, or transport certain quantities of hazardous materials, you may need to undergo a DOT physical.

How will my DOT Physical examination be conducted?

When you come to MedPoint Urgent Care Center for a DOT physical exam, we will begin by collecting your medical history, which includes information about any past surgeries or current medications you may be taking. It is important that you provide truthful and accurate information about your health history to ensure that we can conduct a comprehensive examination. Our exam will involve a full-body check-up to assess your fitness for the job, and we will also measure your vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, height, and weight. Additionally, we will conduct a vision and hearing test as well as a urinalysis to evaluate your overall health and determine whether you meet the requirements for a commercial driver’s license.

What to Bring to a DOT Physical Exam

To ensure a smooth DOT physical exam, please prepare:

  • ALL your medications, including the doses and your doctor’s names and addresses.
  • If you wear eyeglasses, contact lenses, or hearing aids, remember to bring them along with you. These will be necessary for passing the vision and hearing tests.
  • If you suffer from sleep apnea, it is important to bring a recording of the last 3 months
  • If you have diabetes, we will require a hemoglobin A1C test performed within the last 3 months for your exam.

If you’re not sure whether you qualify for a DOT Card, our team at MedPoint Urgent Care Center can help. You can make an appointment with us to have your blood pressure checked and order labs to ensure you meet the medical standards for a commercial driver’s license. Please note that the guidelines we’ve provided are not exhaustive and passing the exam is not guaranteed. Depending on your medical history and examination results, our DOT examiner may need to request additional information or testing. If you meet the medical requirements, you will be issued a valid certificate. Your provider will decide whether you’re eligible for a two-year certification or a shorter time period based on your health needs.

At MedPoint Urgent Care Center, we prioritize getting you back on the road in a timely and efficient manner. We partner with companies like yours to streamline the certification process, ensuring that you can maintain your CDL without unnecessary delays.

At our facility, we can provide medical care for a wide range of non-life-threatening conditions. However, if you are in need of emergency medical attention, please call 911 immediately.
