EKGS

EKGs play an important role in the prevention and early diagnosis of serious heart problems in high-risk individuals.

We Conduct EKG procedures
An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of the heart while the patient is at rest. It involves attaching small electrode patches to the chest, arms, and legs that are connected to an EKG machine. The machine then records the electrical signals that the heart produces with each beat, and displays them as a series of waves on a graph.

These waves provide important information about the heart’s electrical activity, including the timing of each beat, the rhythm of the heartbeat, and the size and shape of the heart’s chambers. This information can help a physician identify abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), heart enlargement due to high blood pressure, blocked or narrowed arteries in the heart (coronary artery disease), and previous heart attacks.

EKGs are often performed as part of a routine physical exam, or if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations. MedPoint Urgent Care Center in Laredo, Texas conducts EKGs on site, making it a convenient option for patients who require this diagnostic test.

Which individuals are recommended to undergo an EKG test?
EKG tests can be essential in detecting and preventing heart conditions in individuals who display symptoms such as rapid pulse, dizziness, or heart palpitations, or have certain risk factors, such as:

  • A history of smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High cholesterol
  • A personal or family history of heart disease or arrhythmias

EKGs are typically not beneficial for individuals who do not exhibit symptoms or possess risk factors. Therefore, EKG tests are usually not conducted as a routine component of a physical examination.

WHAT DOES AN EKG TEST INVOLVE?
Our urgent care center provides a simple and convenient process for EKG tests, which involves placing soft, sticky pads on the patient’s chest, arms, and legs to detect electrical impulses. The impulses are then transmitted to a monitor, and the patient will be required to remain still to ensure precise readings. The entire procedure typically takes only a few minutes.
